Therapy Sessions
How are sessions conducted?
You may have a single therapist, two therapists working together, or a team of therapists. If you have a consultation team, one therapist will be in the therapy room with you for each session, and your team will be working for you behind a one-way mirror.
What is a consultation team?
A consultation team consists of a team of eight or fewer therapist interns and a PhD-level faculty facilitator who is licensed in Georgia and holds supervision credentials. During a session, you will typically be with one, maybe two therapists in the room, while the faculty facilitator and remaining consultation team members observe from behind a one-way mirror.
The team behind the mirror listens closely to the unfolding conversation and thoughtfully considers how best to offer guidance and support the therapy process. Together, the supervisor and student team collaborate to understand the concerns you bring to therapy and develop ideas and solutions that support your goals.
This "many-heads -are better-than-one” approach to therapy has been used successfully for decades and is proven to be highly effective. Clients benefit from the collective wisdom of multiple trained professionals, while therapists-in-training learn how to thoughtfully tailor therapy to meet each client's unique needs.
Sessions are recorded so therapists can carefully review their work with you. Re-watching sessions allows therapists to reflect on the work you did together, notice what was helpful, assess whether the therapy is on track, and identify ways to improve and strengthen future sessions. Our mission is to be as useful as possible with helping you make the changes that you want to see, which is why we take a thoughtful, intentional, and concentrated approach to your care.
Who are our therapists?
All FamilyWorks therapists are graduate students in their second year of study in the Marriage and Family Therapy Program. Prior to being accepted into the program, all of our therapists go through a screening process. In addition, prior to being able to work with people, all our therapists have taken a Comprehensive Exam at the end of their first year of study that explores their personal trustworthiness, reliability, professionalism, self-responsibility, and openness to learning. During the time they are clinically active at FamilyWorks, therapists remain under the direct supervision of MFT Program faculty, who are experienced, Georgia state MFT licensed, qualified MFT supervisors.
