Community Invited to Dr. Seuss Celebration at Ï㽶ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø March 2
|
VALDOSTA — From 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, March 2, the Honors House at Ï㽶ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø will be transformed into a wacky, Seussational, Seussical world — and yes, a map will be provided.
Children of all ages are invited to stop by and help Ï㽶ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø’s Honors Student Association and Alpha Alpha Epsilon chapter of Sigma Tau Delta International English Honors Society celebrate Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Admission is free of charge and open to the general public.
Everyone will have a chance to visit one or more of five themed rooms — The Cat in the Hat, And to Think I Saw it on Mulberry Street, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Lorax, and Horton Hears a Who — complete with fun games and snacks. Readings will take place on the Honors House lawn, with Ï㽶ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø faculty members sharing some of their favorite Dr. Seuss stories.
“We all grew up reading Dr. Seuss,” said Jennifer R. Dandron, president of the Honors Student Association, referring to Ï㽶ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø’s faculty, staff, and students. “This is our way of sharing our passion for all things Seuss with the younger generation.”
Adrienne M. Fry, president of the Alpha Alpha Epsilon chapter of Sigma Tau Delta International English Honors Society, said that Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss’s birthday are the perfect opportunity to promote literacy and encourage children to develop a love of reading. She hopes that everyone attending the celebration will also consider supporting the Literacy Volunteer Program of South Georgia Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides free, one-on-one tutoring to men and women ages 16 and older with low literacy skills. Donations will be accepted at the event.
The Ï㽶ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø Honors House is located at the intersection of Oak Street and Georgia Avenue.
